Default Tranny fluid

I have a 2006 GT with 6700 miles on it. I bought it from the original owner just a month ago with 6100 miles.

Should I change the manual tranny fluid? It is almost 5 yrs old despite only being driven under 7k. The gear changes do feel a bit notchy but I have not driven other GTs so I have nothing to compare against.

Tremec recommends Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF as a replacement. It takes 3.2 Qts. for the fill. I would go ahead and change it for cheap insurance. The trick is, don't fill the fluid until it's over flowing out of the fill hole. Take a zip tie, bend it at the end exactly one inch from the end. Use that as a dip stick to probe the hole with. You want the fluid exactly 1/2 inch below the fill hole (fluid should register 1/2 way on your bent zip tie end).

I would love to try Red Line D4 ATF in my car despite what Tremec recommends. I had excellent results with it in my 1999 Trans Am's T56 transmission. Made it shift so much smoother.

The tranny's in the S197 are notchy and the drivelines clunky. Tranny fluid doesn't see the same type of service that would degrade it like crankcase oil will. IMO, I wouldn't touch the tranny until at least 30,000 miles or farther in your case. I have almost 36,000 miles on my '07 and have no intent on a tranny fluid change in the near future.

I'm now at 31,000 miles and was thinking about changing mine, but Ford did it for me. They had no choice when my transmission was rebuilt. Now I don't have to worry with it.

Wow...2 wildly different opinions!

So Nuke.... despite the age of the fluid you think I should leave it as is. Just curious as to why you think I should leave it as is.

I think if you checked Ford's recommendation for tranny fluid changes you'll see that you're fine (I don't recall what it is but 4 years is nothing for tranny fluid) and that tranny fluid changes are mileage, not time, based. Even on many of my older cars, 80,000 - 100,000 miles was my rule of thumb on tranny fluid changes and I never had a car develop tranny issues despite a number of them passing 200,000 miles. My Stang, on the other hand, will probably see a tranny fluid change by 50-60,000 miles.
