I will, on occasion and as conditions dictate, shift into 5th around 45-50 also. Usually when it's flat and I don't anticipate the need for anything other than gentle acceleration. It's incredible how the average MPG's goes up when cruising like that. Of course, getting an actual 28 MPG on a GT is useless if it takes you almost twice as long to get there...

Use both hands on the keyboard and your head will be fine.

a slightly different aspect to this question would be, at what point do you start losing power in a given gear, or for the most efficient power output when is it best to upshift? 4500? 5000? 5500? I have a stock 2010 gt w/ 3.31 gears.

If you are talking about racing the car at the track then a rough estimate is 500 RPMS above your peak hp. Former NHRA prostock racer, Warren Johnson suggested shifting at 10% above the peak hp.

hmmm. i have never been in 4th gear cruising on the freeway ever... (3.55 gears) i will cruise on a 45mph road in 5th at 45-50mph... if im cruising at 40 or less 4th is actually better gas mileage. It doesnt make the engine work so hard at low speed and rpm..
