Use a mechanic's stethoscope or a screwdriver to the ear to localize the noise. If it's coming from the front of the engine below a valve cover, the most likely cause is a worn cam phaser. This is common in higher mileage engines and especially if anything other than 5W-20 oil was used. A worn timing chain guide or tensioner is another possibility.
