Shock problem

Shock problem
when I torqued down the bottom bolt on the shock, the nut wouldn't tighten. When I took it off and put the new shock the bracket was narrow about a half an inch. Can I somehoww spread the shock mount bracket a half an inch so the shock will slide in? Thanks for any help.
