RE: Question about Casting Numbers
There are no casting differences, save for the turbo blocks are tapped. They are basically identicle, save for different rods/pistons/rings/oil return tap.
The only way to tell if it is an original block, would be to look and see if it has a 'stock' oil return 'fitting' in the block, because an aftermarket tap probably won't have the 'stock fitting' due to the factford discon't. them.
Either way, if it WAS an n/a block that got tapped, no worries, you are fine with it. Same cast, just turbo block had the tap done at the factory. Then, different rods/rings/pistons, to handle boost. Everything else is stock, between n/a, and turbo, basically. Same crank, same block config.
The head was different, to allow a lower compression ratio, but, you can 'massage'(grind away) part of the 'heart shape' on the cyl. head from a late 80's ranger, and get a 'similar' setup.
Hope this helps, Floyd.
