I don't know if the ignition would have much to do with it, that was something I quickly ruled out. Your problem sounds almost exactly like the problem I had. After we replaced the old fuel pump, we took it apart to see what went wrong with it. About 2/3 of the contacts on there were bad, which would explain the sproadic priming. The fact that your car runs for a few seconds when the pump doesn't prime is simply the the car using the pressurized fuel left in the lines.

How many miles does you car have? Mine has 145k.

Is the anyway to rule out if the pump is the problem without having to replace the pump and ircm?

Unfortunately there is no way around it, as I was hoping for the same thing. The only way around dropping the tank- I was told once that you may be able to get an external fuel pump and install it along the fuel line. How and if that would work is beyond my knowledge.

The fuel pump itself is cheap, but if you went to a shop to get it put in it will cost you a couple hundred. A catch 22.

I don't have an ircm like you do, since mine is an '89.

You will of course need to get the backend of the car up. Regular ramps worked for me, although space was a little tight. Once you siphon out the tank, its mainly a matter of depressurizing the system, disconnecting the fuel lines and wiring, loosening the bolts at the filler cap, and loosening the straps that hold the tank. Sounds simple, just a lot of physical work.

Most of the instructions that I have read say the you can just pull the tank down with the filler pipe attached, but that didn't work for me. I had to take out the filler pipe out of the tank.

It is a good idea to have a jack under the tank and a second person so you can lower it gently and keep it balanced as you drop it. Once the tank is out then you can change the pump- but be careful not to break the tabs that hold in the pump.

What I just told you is more of an abbreviated way of doing it. I had a Chilton type book that has a lot more information about it, even though it seemed to miss a few things.

How do I test the ircm to see if that is the problem? I have a feeling it's going to be the ircm since it hasnt given me any problems yesterday or today.

Default 93' Mustang low voltage to fuel pump.

I have a 93 Ford Mustang electronic fuel pump and I'm only getting 9 V DC to my fuel pump connect. I've change three relays; under the seat, Passenger kick panel and air intake area relays have been changed. Still getting 9 V to feel pump and is not enough to send fuel.
Any suggestions?
