What did the code reader or scanner tell you when you tested it? I mean the OBD I tester not the emissions tester. The Ford OBD I computers give out very little information but you do get a starting point. I had a 88 notch with a 2.3 that ran really bad and the computer gave me 3 or 4 things to check which I did with an electrical tester/ohm-meter and was able to fix it. Too many years ago to remember all the particulars.

I do not have an obdI scanner so I wouldn't be able to provide any codes. I reviewed the smog test paper and it appears to shows that my timing is at 15* but the guy didn't fail me. How can I check the timing without a timing gun. I cleaned out the egr valve it was somewhat dirty, I checked if it was working when vaccum was applied and the orange rubber inflated fully which Im guessing means its working.

There is a way to check the codes by turning the key on and off a certain number of times to jog the computer's memory (unless my memory is bad too) or by inserting a jumper in the test plug. You may find this info in a repair manual. I moved recently and mine is still in a box somewhere or I would try to give more information. You might be able to find this info by googleing or something.

Once you find the info to check the code you get the code number by counting the check engine light flashes and then you can look up the info in your manual for a starting point.
Hope this helps.
