Default Electrical Problems

I need help with problem I can't figure out. It started about 2 weeks ago when the battery light came on. I put in a new battery and thought I fixed the problem but it didn't. So I drove it like that for a while until it wouldn't start the car anymore. So I replaced both battery cables and had the alternator tested which was fine. Put the cables on and still having the prolem. I put the battery out of my truck in and it started but the voltmeter will not go up. I don't know what else to check, any suggestions?

Loose or disconected ground somewhere?? I'd start by checking all your connections.
