**UPDATED!!** Starting problems.........continued....
I've searched past threads and tried some of the things that were suggested to others to no avail, so here I sit.......
Background: I'm trying to get my 90 5.0 LX running...the only thing different in the wiring is I did a 3g alt. conversion and did have a mini starter on it.
The problem is still that as soon as I try to connect the postive battery cable, the starter starts trying to crank. I've checked my grounds and I put my stock starter back on and corrected the wiring. As it is now I have the positive battery cable and fusible links on the firewall side of the starter solenoid, and the starter cable and alt. cable (from 3g) on the other side towards the front of the car. I'm not sure what else to do, so I'm about to head up to O'reilly's to try a new starter solenoid.....
I really want to get it running today...any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Sounds like either a bad starter relay or solenoid. One of them is closed if it starts as soon as you hook the battery up. Try check both of them with a meter and see which it is.

take a look at your starter solenoid and make sure you dont have anything but the starter cable on the side closest to the battery. Your probelm is probaly here.

I just bought a new solenoid (only $18, so what the hell..), so I'll let ya'll know how it turns out. Thanks for the replies!!!
Okay, so it is officially not the starter relay/solenoid....I put in the new one and same problem....I left the cable on for just a second and a cable started to smoke, so I disconnected it. It turns out the problem may be from my alternator upgrade instead b/c it was the blk/org wire(s) coming from the alt that were smoking.
Who has done the alternator upgrade? Here's exactly what I've done:
1--regulator plug was direct swap
2--ran 4awg cable from terminal on back of alt (stud) to starter solenoid(opposite terminal from battery cable)
3--clipped other connnector, put eyelets on blk/org cables and connected to same stud as 4 awg cable on alt. Ran white/blk wire to stator terminal.
What have I done wrong or what am I missing????

the 4 guage cable from the alt goes on the same side as the + on your starter solenoid. There should ONLY be the cable going to the starter on the opposite terminal from where the + from the battery is connected on the starter solenoid. This is why your starter is spinning when you connect the + cable to the battery.

Hey dude, i'm having starter solenoid problem too. I'm getting scary battery smoke at the neg battery cable
and clicks but no cranking. Posted about it just now: "Scary Smoking Battery"
Lets see if we can help one another and solve these problems

Also, the positive terminal on the battery and the solenoid are warm after trying to crank it....Is this normal??
