94 Cobra valve train "tapping"
My car is a 94 SVT Cobra (#500 of 5009). Bought car 7 years ago with 55,xxx miles on it from original owner. I have put about 7,000 miles on car in 7 years. Tapping in upper portion of motor became increasingly apparent over time. I finally removed intake and rocker covers (i was the first person to remove the intake) and found about half of my valve retainers were worn and shiny due to bottom of the stock crane/ford RR's rubbing the top of the valve retainers during valve opening/compressing. One of the retainers was obviously being rubbed much harder than the others. I replaced that RR that was rubbing the worst and filed the bottom of the rest of the RR's so they would no longer rub. WTF is causing this? Has anyone else with a 94-95 Cobra been through this tapping/rubbing problem like I have? Motor is pretty quiet now, but i'm still F'ing pissed because like I said, I was the first person to go into this motor and now I need to replace most of the retainers. Ford is NO help and neither is SVT they both play stupid, probably because they really are. Crane is S***, don't buy crane, their QC sux.

yes, affirmative, pushrod ends of all 16 looked good. The clearance between the valve stem and RR roller tip (valve lash) is what it was before (which was from the factory), anyway, I'm talking about a 94 purely stock COBRA with hydraulic roller lifters, (it has the fulcrum that the RR sits on and the bolt that passes through the RR and fulcrum). The only thing that you are supposed to look for when installing a RR is a pushrod that is too tight after torqueing the bolt for the RR.
Crane is S*** because the first replacement RR that ford sent me was out of spec and once I proved to them that it was out of spec (not an easy task to prove this to an idiot parts guy ) they sent me another. Then the second one was a different design with oil hole pointing directly upwards instead of 90'd like the other 15, but I said the H*** with it, I wasnt going to fight those idiots again so now I have 15 RR's with the oil hole at a 90 and 1 RR with the oil hole straight up & down. I'll never buy crane S*** again.

call the 1-800 number on the drivers valve cover and bitch
then again... make sure you have a full oil level... if someone hammed up a seal and you dont check the oil all the time... it might run low

Thanks guys, Nice 94 Cobra's
94 Cobrakid16: if I posted a pic of my car, it would look exactly like yours, mine is white and #500 of 5009, the only difference now is I have installed racing springs (which dropped it about 2") and FRPP 18" 2000 Cobra R rims with Michelin Pilot sports (285/35-18 rears and 265/35-18 fronts), o yeah and drilled and slotted brake rotors which I really like, they look awesome on those 13" cobra brakes when looking through those wide open rims that I have. You would definitely know if you had this problem because you would be extremely irritated by the persistant tapping coming from the upper portion of the motor.
Addermk2: If you read above (my 1st post) you'll see that I only put 7,000 miles on the car in 7 years. The oil has NEVER gone low, not on my watch anyway, and if it did, it would not cause the underside of the RR's to rub/hit against the valve retainers.
