Default Water temp probs...any suggestions?

My water temp rises when im at idle but when i drive it drops down to 180 which is normal. For example i just went for a cruise then to taco bell an when i got to taco bell it was at a lil under 200 but as i started waitin on the line it went up to 240 after about 15-20 min wait. Then i finally got my food an as im on the way home my temp dropped back down to 190 within bout a minute or 2. Do the temps drop that fast or....? any suggestions appreciated.

The fan has some resistence so im pretty sure it aint that but are the temps suppose to drop that fast? Could it be the thermostat is sticking?

next time you have it at an idle feel your upper hose. if its really hot your t-stat is opening. usually if you're sitting at idle, and the car is over heating you have one of 3 problems, stuck closed t-stat, plugged radiator, inop fan. if you can drive the car and the temp cools down like that, usually that means your t-stat is opening, letting coolant into the radiator. which is what makes me think theres a radiator problem. but it could also be that the fan isnt pulling air, so at idle, your coolant is just not getting cooled off like it is moving, when air is passing over the radiator.

If you have an electric fan, make sure it is coming on. If you don't, hook up a timing light and put chalk mark on one of the fan blades. Shoot the fan. It should not move or move very slowly and uniformly. If it jumps around, you need a new fan clutch.
