Fuel Pump
I have a '95 5.0 . I do not want to get ripped off by a mechanic again, so i was wondering if anyone can tell me how to install a new fuel pump on a 1995 5.0 . If you have any info on this please be as specific as possible. Thanks in advance!

RE: Fuel Pump
1. Drive the car until it's as low in fuel as possible (obviously, you can't do this if the pump has stopped working).
2. Un bolt the filler neck support to gas tank flange bolt (on PS of tank).
3. Open gas door and unbolt the gas filler neck flange/gas cap.
4. Wiggle filler neck to remove from PS of tank/grommet -- may not come out all the way, in which case you'll have to wait until you start to lower the tank.
5. Support tank with floor jack or similar
6. Unbolt gas tank straps.
7. Lower tank far enough to remove the charcoal canister vent & undo wiring connections at float & pump and the feed & return lines. The fuel line connections are a bit tricky and Ford has a special tool for them but you can remove them with screwdrivers. If you need to replace them, which I would, since you're under there, I believe they're called a duckbill connector. They were like .20 a piece at Ford but you can get them in the Help! section of most chain auto part stores.
8. Lower gas tank - may have to move it laterally to get it past tailpipes.
Once the tank is out from under the car:
1. Clean off the top of the tank to get rid of sand and debris
2. Use a brass punch or wood block to remove the pump hold down ring (no sparks).
3. Remove pump bracket from tank - will require twisting & turning to get out of internal sump.
4. Remove pump from the bracket, install new pump in bracket (depending on pump, you may have to make new wiring connections <BBK, etc.>
5. Put the new sock on the pump
6. Put a new rubber o-ring gasket on the tank, twist and turn the filter and housing into the tank
7. Tighten locking ring with wood or brass punch
8. Change the filter!
The rest is the reverse of the removal.
I think I remembered everything...

RE: Fuel Pump
Also - as a side note, if your pump ever does quit and you're stranded, you might be able to whack the tank a couple of times with your fist or a rubber mallet and have it start up. That'll allow you to get it home.

RE: Fuel Pump
Thanks for the instructions. My problem is that when im driving the RPMs will drop to zero and then shoot back to normal. This makes the car buck, and sometimes shut off! When the car is at idle the RPMs fluctuate between 800 and 600 RPMs. Ive take it to multiple mechanics all with the same result...they dont know what the problem is! Does this sound like a fuel pump problem? Ive changed the coolant temp sensor, O2 sensors, and cleaned the MAF and throttle position sensor. The fuel pump is that last thing i can think of, but i always thought that if the fuel pump is bad it will just go. Is it possible for the fuel pump to be going bad, or do they just go bad and dont work anymore? Basically i need to know if this is def the fuel pump? Thanks guys

RE: Fuel Pump
I'd pull the injectors first and see if one quit or is really dirty/clogged, then check the fuel filter it may just be clogged, if you put the key in the accesory posistion you should hear the fuel pump, sounds like a short somewhere that is killing the engine? Good Luck

RE: Fuel Pump
Did they check the fuel pressure while this happens? That should tell you something. Is it only when driving? If the fuel pressure swings wildly on the gauge, the pump could be going.
It's tough to say but I wouldn't just go swap the pump without doing a little more checking. If you're looking to swap the pump anyway, then do it and see if it fixes it but I'd recommend checking the fuel pressure first.
