my convertible top on my '87 used to move slow up and down and now only goes down by itself and you have to help it back up, i was wondering could it be low fluid and if so how do i fill it , it sucks looking like a dork having to put the top back by hand.HELP

It could be the fluid or the motor is about shot.

like said above, it could be he fluid, so check that first. but I bet its the motor, this happend to me. I got mine off ebay for $85 don't pay $400 for a new one!

EDIT: Check the brushes in the old motor too, they could be worn down and cost about 20 bucks to replace.

just buy a new motor, you'll be amazed at the difference, chances are that after 19yrs it crapped out.

Check the fluid first, it is located behind the trim panel in the trunk. It may need to be topped off. Does it make noise even when it stops moving?

small rubber plug on the right of the motor (can be a real bear to get out) ford recommends transmission fluid for them.
your lift cylinders are probably leaking if it were the lines you would know.

Tranny fluid? Not Hydrolic fluid?

yeah automatic tranny fluid can be used for everything, we use it in our log splitter for hydrolic fluid and it works awesome!
