Default Oil light

This may sound like a dumb question, but what does the oil light in my 86 mean? I have checked to see if my oil is low, but it is just fine.

Usually it's for low pressure. Could also be a faulty sending unit.

I would have low oil pressure? How can I check my oil pressure without having an actual gauge? I don't know of any leaks but I guess I need to crawl under the car and check the oil pan.

You can't. You have to put a mechanical gauge in place of the sending unit to see. When does the light come on? Does the engine tick or knock like it has low pressure?

The light coming on is completely random. It is starting to happen more and more though. It doesn't come on while driving. It is either on when i start the car or it isn't. No, I don't have any type of knocking. The only thing about my car is that the idle is at 1200rpms and I don't know how to get it down.

You can try replacing the sending unit and see if it solves the problem.

Already, sounds good. The sending unit is in the oil pan, correct. I'm guessing it will come out about as easy as the oil pan plug?

the oil pressure sending unit is on the side of the toming chain cover, it looks like a little bell threaded into a hexagonal rod with a wire going into the harness
