Default Can I replace my 94 GT 5.0 with a 97 Mountaineer?

I was looking for a donor motor to replace my blown 94' Mustang GT 5.0. I ran across a 97' Mercury Mountaineer 5.0. I was told they have GT40p heads. What would I have to do to make this engine work in my Stang?

i am 99% sure that the Mountaineer long block will swap into your 5.0, you will lose your egr function thought as the newer gt40p heads dont have egr provision. Ive been told you can have the heads drilled for egr function for about $100.

the Mountaineer/Explorer 5.0's use a less agressive camshaft than the older 5.0HO, swap in your old cam or get a new e-303.

the headers, and the front engine excesories will need to be swaped,

look for a casting mark that says GTP, that way you can be sure you have gt40p heads.

By putting a more aggresive Cam in an aging engine (70K), will the factory lifters and springs handle the lobe differences?? Spring fatigue is bad news and I've seen bent valves in response. Do you recommend changing those as well in a 70K motor, or is the E-303 tame enough for factory equipment?

One more question... The 97-99 Mountaineer/Explorer 5.0 is said to be used from the old Cobra block/head leftovers. These newer engines are powered by coil packs rather than distributors... what modifications will I need to switch the new engine to distributor?

hmmmmm i did not know they were distributer-less [&:] good question.
http://www.alternativeauto.com/water...ives/edis.html take a look.

no, with 70k i probably would not put the e-303 cam in there if it was my engine, unless i upgraded to the ford racing gt40 valve train

i always say, the stock 5.0 cam is plenty good for a fun street car.
