Ok so when i put the 89 mustang lx into 5th gear it doesn't work.. it goes in fine no grinding but when its in 5th actually like neutral.. noit revs up but does not accelerate.. anybody have an idea what this is??

Also the car has the 85 mph speedo which doesn't seem to work.. is there anyway i can buy a 140 mph speedo and just put it in? or what else would i have to do/change?

fifth gear is an overdrive. Its meant to keep the rpms down when cruising on the hwy/frwy. Drop it down to 4th to accellerate. Stock gear ratio make this problem considerably worse if you have stock rear gears.

still don't know why 5th gear is acting like neutral...

My old V6 did that in 5th when the clutch was slipping bad and almost gone...New clutch and clutch plate solved the problem

How is reverse engauging? It is actuated off the same arm inside the trans case. The pic shows the 5 th gear shift fork it is held on with a small roll pin it could be broken or possibly the shaft is broken were it connects to the arm on the side or the case. The trans needs to be pulled out and dissassembled for inspection.

the c-clip on the fifth gear is prone to breaking in T-5s ihad that happens when i rebuilt mine, put it in the car and test drove it 5th worked for about a mile and after that it acted like it was in neutral. 5th slid down the shaft and wasn't making contact with the countershaft gear check the clutch and if thats doesn't fix it take the tranny out and check the gear make sure it's where it should be
