alternator

what should be the voltage out put of the alternator on a 85 mustang with external regulator, the reason i ask this is cause when i have my car running and the the alternator is hooked to the bat and all electronics off the bat shows 12. 4 or something like that, but when the wire from the alt isnt hooked up to the bat the wire shows a 24 volt output. whats up with that?

sounds like your voltmeter is screwed up or has a battery in it thats dying.
