lol...I'm not that serious about it (yet) Zach...I'm just having some fun playing with the idea. I'll keep that in mind, though.

Tough decisions

I have a buddy who owns a chassis shop so anything you need new I can get cheaper then summit and most places on the web. Just let me know and I can get it priced up.

when it comes down to it they cost about the same.

the 347 will rev up faster and fit under the hood a little easier.

the 351W will not have the block flex problems the 347 is known for and
still give you room to add a power adder with out cracking the block
but they weigh more and have a heavier rotating mass so wont spool up as quick.

if you really want to add some nitrous or boost later a 351 is the only way to go

if its going to stay n/a forever a 347 will perform a little better.

Sorry vig, i dont mean to steal your thread or anything. just currious if this would be a good starting block to a 351 swap or is that a lil too much money for a short block?

thats a decent street short block.

dont know about the pistons. good price though.

amazing...... they only got 385hp with their GT-40 heads and cam with .552 lift
vs. my 475hp with AFR 185's and cam with .579 lift and more durration.

I would opt for some of their options listed at the bottom
like:
ARP connecting bolts
Forged pistons
windage tray

Ok, as i see it to build something decent from the 351W you will need the following stuff that cannot come from your 5.0.........
Oil pan
Intake
Headers
Distributor
So that stuff could easily end up costing..........
Oil pan and pick-up tube-----250
Intake--------------------------200
Headers------------------------450
Distributor----------------------250
Thats about $1100 bucks 9these are off the top of my head prices for new stuff)
For that 1100 you have just paid for a 347 kit and a good amount of the machine work.
I think you need to go to junkyard and get a 5.0 to build, that way the DD isn't down while you are getting new motor ready.......

I've heard that the piston pin location compromises the oil ring position on the 347 motor and isn't very desirable and limits longevity. For all out power you're not gonna beat a 351W, and adding some aluminum heads will help with the weight issue.
Although with a 351W based engine, why would anyone want to "rev" it up if it's gonna be a street motor? 6 grand is more than enough on the street and 6500 is not out of the question with the proper valvetrain. The torque benefits will out weigh all other issues in a street race

Years ago the oil rings were not in the right place on most 347's.
That problem has been taken care of.
Bad part about the 351W swap is that the 351W wieghts about 75# more than the 5.0 and all that new wieght is on the front wheels......
