351 heads on a 302??

RE: 351 heads on a 302??
Hi,
The weekend is here and I can get back to the car. The heads I have look like the ones in your photo. Mine have 6 bolt valve covers and inline valves; BUT, mine takes the smaller plugs. Any idea why? Everything I read says the smaller plugs indicate a 351C head which I don't think will work (larger combustion chamber volume and different water passages.)

can you get a picture of the heads or are they already on the car? or even of the angle the the plug goes into the head, maybe you might have gotten a 302 with some gt-40P heads anda picture of the valve cover maybe will help us determine if you got 351C heads or 351W heads.

RE: 351 heads on a 302??
Hi,
The heads are already on the car. With the valve covers off they look exactly like the picture in the previous post. As far as the valve cover, I'm using the cover from the original 302 engine; 6 bolt and it fits just fine. I'm not familiar with a gt-40P head; could you explain what that looks like and did it take a smaller plug? Don't know how to measure plug angle.

RE: 351 heads on a 302??
Hi,
Stupid questions are always welcome; sometimes they're not so stupid. But, yes I did take the plastic plugs out. At first I thought I had a bad socket so I tried other sockets with different plugs. Then I took my spark plug thread chaser which has two sizes and the smaller size fits. So, I tried an older Autolite 25 plug (which is called for on the 351C) and it fit. So, I seem to have a 351W head that takes Autolite 25 plugs. That got me to wondering if the very latest 351W heads went to a smaller plug.

they are probably stock 302 heads.
too bad the heads are on, the casting number is underneath.
is the intake on yet? you might be able to see the casting # with a mirror, its by where the lifters are.

The windsor heads are the same. Good boost in the hp ratings the. My windsor heads have casting num on the top and they have big plugs. The GT40 head is a step above stock 302 haeds. wont notice much difference. Cleveland heads will also bolt up. Find the year and check the numbers. The "BOSS" 302 in the mach 1s and boss mustangs had 351 c heads.

The only mustang that came with the Boss engine was the Boss 302's. No Mach 1 had that engine. Also Clevlend heads will not just bolt up. they need a fair amount of machining to fit the windsor style blocks. Try searching Clevor and you'll find a bunch of sites that have done the cleveland swap. It is very good for high rpm race engines but the ports are way too big for a daily driver. And the gt40 heads are way better than stock heads. If the 93 cobra can make 240 rwhp stock then in my opinion they are a very good head and even better when ported.
