Default Mustang EFI Ignition question

Hi guys;

I am new to this forum and to teh mustang Scene as a whole. I have a friend who have a 1992 toyota celica that went into some major modifications among which were installing a 1986 Mustang 5.0 engine and making it a RWD car instead of teh FWD.
the car runs on Megasquirt now as a fuel management only and they installed a mallory ignition box for better spark, but nothing is controlling the ignition timing, so that makes me wonder, does the ford need an ECU for timing maps? what would happen without the ECU? does it have MAF or AFM or MAP sensor as original setting? what will happen if these sensors were not available? the car now runs using the MAP sensor on MS, it has a twin turbo setup runing 4psi but its not fast at all, I have a feeling that it has a locked timing, advise me please.

kind regards

I think the ECU controls the timing maps. If not the ECU, it has another ignition computer. Or, uses an electronic pick up dizzy that just sends a signal to the ECU, and has a preset nonadjustable timing curve.

Sounds like he has the MS set up as a piggyback ECU on the ford ECU (will just control fuel that away), with an ignition box. 2 things he can do. Get a retard ****, which I think Mallory has a box that will use a retard **** they make for it, or rewire and set up the MS ECU to run ignition and fuel. Hear ignition can be a pain with MS, so some just piggyback it.

If you just pulled it out & dropped it in it should be ~10* timing. Nobody noticed the TFI being unplugged? Put it a non-EI distributor (mech & vacuum advance), time it & go.
