I have a cheap one that works fine, i also have a phaserII which "blocks" the signal and they cant read your speed. I think it works, i've passed a few cops goin about 20 over and they didnt do anyting, and i was the only car on the road.

hmm i have been thinking about getting one of those but always thought thats its a bit to obveous when the cop cant get a read on you you know?

i wounder if the radar guns not getting a read is common to them or not, like thats why they didnt do anything about getting you because its just a regular thing that their guns sometimes dont pick up every car. thats the only way i think it wouldnt be obveous you know? but if it works it works!

I thought cops were trained to be able to judge speed just by looking at you? I mean, obviously not exactally but Im pretty sure if you put me on the side of the road I could tell if someone was going 20mph over the SL. Could they use that against you or do they have to have an actual reading?

if you ask to see the print out of you speed and they don't show it to you then they can't give you a ticket, and if they do you can take it to court and tell the judge that the cop didn't show it to you and it gets thrown out.... well atleast in michigan

94GTcoupe, check out the link I posted about the radar detector forum you should get any info you need for your report there or feel free to ask me questions.

88BlueGT Best detectors: right now are the Escort 8500 x50, Valentine1 and Bel RX65.
If you live in an area such as Canada or West Virginia where detectors are illegal check out the Bel STI series, it can not be detected.
The best bang for your buck? Check out the Bel 895 being sold at Radio Shack for $199 this uses the older style motherboard and chip set of the more expensive Bel RX65.
If for some reason I do not have my V1 with me I use the 895 as my backup. This thing is amazing for the price!!! Hard to beat for the money.

Yes cops are trained to be able to judge your speed by vision but if they do not have something to back them up then they have no proof you were speeding. Most states require if you request from the officer he has to show you the reading on the radar gun or laser gun.
Now please understand a cop can pull you over and write you a ticket without having any proof or show you any proof, it is up to you to decide if you are going to fight a ticket like this or not. The courts will favor the police officer on his judgment so that is why some cops just write tickets knowing that the speeder will not try to fight it.

Ninety5five0: I bet the officer was not actually running radar at the time or he was not interested in you, he may have been looking for bigger fish so to speak.
Remember just because you see a cop does not mean he/she has or is using radar. In my state of Indiana they will sit along the highway and not radar anyone, they are just there so people who see them will slow down.
Also a radar detector will NOT detect a police car or policeman, it can only detect if they have the radar on. NOT all cops have radar.
Take a look at the link I posted and you can see where the Phazer was tested and it failed.

Mowin8603 I have never seen a radar gun not pickup a car unless they are just so messed up, but most guns have a self calibration test to make sure it is working before an officer even uses it.
Now in heavy traffic radar is a little harder to use because of aiming it at the correct car can sometimes be difficult, that how sometimes someone gets a ticket even though they were not really speeding, the officer aimed at the car but another car may have been in the way or something like that.
In heavy traffic areas police will use laser because they can pinpoint the exact car by looking thru the display, you actually aim a laser gun at a car.
If you look thru the display you will get a cross hair or a red dot that you aim at the car you want and it can tell them how fast you are going and how far away you are.
I have even been able to laser birds while they are flying thru the air, it is a little tough to do but sometimes I will get a reading hahaha
Motorcycle are the same way they are harder to target because they are so small not much mass for radar to bounce off of or laser to target.

Remember no radar detector is 100% especially if they are using instant on, in the state of Indiana the state boys are deadly with their instant on radar!!
I can deal with laser, it can be jammed but instant on is a BI**H!!
Never be the lead car, or the car in the rear when speeding.

Also some of you may not know this but some police cars have front and rear radar antennas that can clock you as you sneak up on them or if they are driving they can still radar you.
You will see usually little round antennas in the back window that look like a little spot/fog light with a white lens on them, that is a radar antenna.
Some of the older styles will be huge antennas that are as big as a headlight with a white lens on them.

Someone mentioned you do not have to worry about X band radar for the most part that is true but I know for fact that for you people who live in New Jersey your state boys use instant on X band and they are quite deadly with them!!
They will target the back of your car as they sit on overpasses and radio down to a waiting car with your car info.
Some small towns and even sheriffs still use x band so be aware!!

This brings up a good reason why people love the V1 so much is because it has a rear antenna for picking up such tactics as this.
Most brands can pickup some rear detection but it is very limited, most likely after 200 feet or so it will not detect any rear radar signal.

There are 3 bands in use right now for radar X,K and KA, there is also KU that is being tested here in the US but is not "officially" used here yet, you will find that band in Europe and other countries, but I bet it gets approval to use here soon.
X band is the oldest and not widely used but it still show its ugly head from time to time, K band is the most popular since it is the cheapest unit to buy at this time, Ka is the least used because of the prices for the guns but they are also the hardest to detect by radar detectors.
Thankfully a lot of cops are lazy and just run constant on radar all the time which makes it easier for those of us who have detectors to detect them long before they see us.
Those who have taken the time to learn how to use the instant on usually are pretty good with it and they know how to be sneaky!!

This is nothing but a cat and mouse game, sometimes they win and get to write a ticket sometimes we sneak by.
