Default 'Freshen Up' an '89 5.0 HO?

I am looking for the most cost effective way to freshen up a 5.0 enigine that I got out of a '89 Lincoln Mark VII LSC. It had 130K on it and started/ran fine. I am converting it to Mass Air and already have the computer/harness/sensor unit etc...

The engine is on a stand now. This seems like the perfect time to freshen it up a bit. I want to spend my money (about $600) and time in the right places. I want to squeeze as much HP of it without going broke. In the end, I am looking for a reliable and fun 5.0.

Any suggestions? Rings, bearings, gaskets, headers? Recommended kits?

Don't forget a new oil pump...never to soon for a fresh pump if the bottoms open and available.

Its difficult if not impossible to accuratly measure what needs to be machined withou tthe proper tools. Measuring the crank is the easiest, all you'll need is some platiguage (available at most auto parts stores). But as for the bore, youll need a bore guage, and a micrometer. MOST people dont have these tools, thats why most people just bore out an engine.
The first thing you need to do is measure al of the tolerances, thatll tell you where you need to put your money and time. If theres a local machine shop around you, call em and ask them how much itll cost to have the tolerances measured.

Concur with P Zero.
I think a good (ARP) oil pump shaft is a good $20 idea too.
Use a moly type ring.
New timing set.
I think for $600 budget you may even be able to get a new cam for it from FRPP. Dunno.
Kylon paint is cheap too, take the $$$ from the grocery budget.........
