You really need to start tracing wires. I bet some electrical tape slipped off a wire as you wrestled the stereo into the dash, and the wire has just recently leaned against some piece of metal. I say start as the stereo because it's easy, but you should try to trace all wires running to/from the cluster. I keep harping on the dimmer circuit, because it sounds like all of the affected lights are those which run through it. Let us know what you find.

By the way, don't bother putting any more fuses in until you pull the stereo, or take some other action. Even if you put a fuse in and it doesn't blow, there is still a problem...and you should find it. Good luck.

I had a similar problem because someone had messed up the wiring of an aftermaket radio and then put in a 20 amp fuse for the instrument lighting. It wound up melting the wires together and creating the short where the radio is. Anyhow, I replaced the wires and it worked ok for a while with the 5 amp fuse but recently the short returned.

I think that that wires are melted together further up into the dash where I could not trace them. Does anyone know where theheater/radioinstrument light wires connect under the dash so that I can replace that entire section of wiring to the radio/heater control lights?

A diagram would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

sure, if you want to melt the rest of the circuit. There is a dimmer wire behind the radio that is orange or orange and white, check it out.

Possibly a pinched wire from the radio adapter. You should not put in a larger fuse.
