Wait a minute, fellas. There's nothing wrong with his tranny! I think you'll find that most people's trannies on here grind into reverse if a forward gear isn't selected first. Mine is that way too. I don't believe that reverse gear is synchronized in T5s, so it's not grinding because your synchros are going out.
+1. My forward gear happened to be 3rd and only 3rd. I had the same problem as you and 3rd to reverse was smooth as silk.
Yeah, I use third too...just because it's easiest to grab. Mine isn't that particular though; any gear will work...at least I think so.

a little food for the brain here, does anyone know why it does this sometimes causing the reverse gear to not be accesible?????? first correct answer gets a attaboy and a smiley face. twisted i would be sure and get the column next day air if it werent in stock also

Sorry. Um...I can give you a crude and perhaps incorrect answer. At least on motorcycle gears, there are shift dogs on each gear that are actually what are mating to the drive gear. These shift dogs have open sections and closed sections, kind of like a jack o lantern's teeth. Sometimes these dogs line up so that the drive gear dog fits intothe open sections of the driven gear dog, and sometimes they line up so that they butt against the closed sections of the driven gear dog, preventing that gear from engaging. Generally, if you just let the clutch out, and try again, it will go into gear. I have no idea if car trannies work that way too, but that's my best answer...for better or worse.

attaboy!!!! well its sorta like that anyway. no really,recently i found out upon study that the world class t-5s came with a anti reverse feature so someone who couldnt shift couldnt accidently throw it in reverse instead of 4th i guess, but i said why would my 83 model do that all the time and only because i just got that motor and tranny back off of my 83 2 weeks ago was i able to confirm because my 83 was purchased in 1994 and it had a wc t-5 in it and i never knew that.

I didn't know that about T5s. I'll try jamming it into reverse at 85 tomorrow, and see what happens. If the tranny grinds itself to pieces, I'll send you the bill.. Alright fellas, I'm going to bed--starting a new job in the morning. Late.
