So I pulled the codes on my 88 mustang gt in order to try to troubleshoot a backfiring problem I have been having randomly. The codes I got were 94 and 33. When I looked them up here is what they said:

94: AIR System inoperative-Transmission TCC circuit/solenoid problem

33: EGR did not open intermittently

Unfortunatley I don't know what to do in order to address either of these problems. Further, I don't even understand what exactly the AIR System or EGR are/do. If someone could please enlighten me and let me know what parts to check/replace in order to resolve these issues I would be most appreciative.

Not too sure about the air system, but the egr recirculates exhaust gas back into your intake, mainly used while driving at a steady speed, not really open while accelerating and slowing down. Alot of people just delete their EGR valve, i personally did.

As someone once told me, code 33 is a EGR delete courtesy of the EEC (computer). The AIR system is your smog pump and related components. Sounds like your smog pump isn't working/hooked up.

I found a really good post from 7upedition that described how to troubleshoot the EGR. Now I just need some help understanding code 94 and more importantly what to do to fix the issue.

Do a search on threads with me talking about the thermactor system being inoperable on left or right bank, and the crossover tube that runs between the heads being clogged, and how the smog pump is probably working because only one bank is having an issue. I just did one a week or two ago. If you can't find it, I'll rehash it.
