Tranny rebuild costs???

Tranny rebuild costs???
ok, the tranny on my 87 GT needs a rebuild because the 5th gear is way out of synch and it feels like the clutch doesnt want to grab it. most places that i call will only do a job that requires total rebuild. i'm going to put a SPEC 2 clutch in while i'm getting all that work done. i found a place that charges $1100 for everything. is that a decent price???

yes $1100 is about average for a shop to do it... i charge 100 - 200 labor parts are 210 unless u need hard parts, shipping is usualy 100-150 for both ways (your expence)

RE: Tranny rebuild costs???
so should i just take it to the shop since its close to home??? its a 5spd BTW.
i had to drive it tonight on the freeway. i was doing 80mph in 4th. my gas mileage is sucking. i'm tired of this no 5th gear crap.

ok thats not bad, let me know when you get ready to take it out, and i'll come home for the weekend and i can't help ya take it out if you want, it'll save on shipping too...
describe your problem a little more, when u say it doesn't want to grab what do you mean... does it want to free rev when it's in 5th or what? just saying that the clutch doesn't want to grab doesn't make sence... the way u have it worded makes me thing it's a bad clutch not a tranny

RE: Tranny rebuild costs???
ok, well lets see, a couple months ago, i would shift into 5th, and then after releasing the clutch, it would pop out and into neutral. so i would have to hold it in 5th and let it catch. it would try to push out, but i wouldnt let it. it slowly got worse, and now it when i shift into 5th, it just wont go. it feels like the gear is just spinning, and all you hear is grinding, no matter how hard i push the clutch down and the stick forward, all you hear is grinding. sometimes you can feel the gear slow down when the RPMs drop, and can then pop it into 5th, and it makes clunking feeling.
any clues???

RE: Tranny rebuild costs???
you need atleast new syncro's, you will prolly need a whole 5th gears... future reference holding a tranny in gear will SEVERLY fu*k it up... best case senerio your syncro is shot, worst case the tranny will cost more to repair that it would to buy a rebuilt one from astroperformance.com
