91 GT project
Hey my first post. been scanning the forum for a hour or so I owe 3 ford taurus SHO's and have learned to work on them now I bought a 91 gt for a new fun car. rwd v8 anyways i know jack about the car. what kind of things break ? what needs to be upgraded first ? it has 150 k on it. Flows already. i have been looking around.. maybe waterpump ? new wires ? new cap ? and upgrade the brakes. any input would be great Thnx

RE: 91 GT project
check and replace the plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and spark plug wires only if they look worn and need replacing. good idea to change the fuel filter too if you have no idea how longs it's been since the last, if ever, change. if the water pump ain't leaking, don't worry about it. good idea to check the brakes and replace the pads/shoes if they look shot. should also flush out all the old brake fluid and replace with some fresh fluid too. drain and flush the radiator also as this is one thing that lots of people neglect to do and overheating could be a problem later. check the drive belt too for wear and cracks and replace it if it looks like it needs replacing too. also good idea to pull and clean the throttle body and the IAC motor on the side of the TB too with some good carb cleaner.
first mod you should do if it aint' already gone is remove the intake air silencer, it's on the other side of the fenderwell at the inlet to the air cleaner and just chokes the air flow something badly. then install a K&N air filter in place of the stock paper one too. next thing I would recommend after you do all the rest is too install a set of equal lenght 1-5/8" shorty headers to let the motor breathe better on the exhaust side. and if you don't have to pass emission tests, get an off road X or H pipe to replace the mid pipe with the cats in it.
then go for some new rear gears, 3.73's if you have an auto and 3.55's if you have a stick shift.
that ought to be enough to keep you busy for a while! LOL

RE: 91 GT project
you can change the mid pipe and still keep the other pipes and mufflers as is.
the wires will work also.
Autolite plugs are fine too.
I've heard lots of good things about the Pro 5.0 short shifter too, but have no experience with one as I'm a shiftless auto guy! LOL
