There shjould be timing marks on the balancer from 0-30 i think, at leas that what mine is, and the metal peice would be the pointer/marker whatever you wanna call it, and like you said just make a nice visible line and what number timing you want and you should be able to see it better with the gun and what not. Anyway i would really suggest going over like 16-18 or so, every car is different tho, im running 16 and i have no detonation even with 87, so just bump it up a bit, take it around the block hit WOT and hear for pinging, and find a degrre that you like

is there any excessive wear in the engine when the timing us bumped from stock to 14 or 15? and what HP gains are normally expected with those numbers?

i dont belive it hurts the engine-otherwise others wouldnt probably do it, and i heard about 1-2 hp per every degree, and thats flywheel hp i believe, for ex. you wont feel 10 hp difference if you bumped it up 5-10, but it should help some.........

crawl under your car and clean off your balancer...engine off of course!!..then mark the little lines with chalk...helps with the timing light....you will see the marks when the #1 piston is +-30 degrees TDC.
