With the engine a little warm, spray down the entire engine bay with Simple Green. Let sit for about 5 minutes and then hose off. It's a good idea to let the engine run with the hood closed to help dry everything out. After it's dry take some tireshine and spray down the plastic and hoses and such in the engine bay to get a deep wet look. It also doesnt hurt before you start to spray electrical connections with silicone. It's not good to spray any electrical things directly with water, so you may want to cover the maf and distributor like Pro said. I dont think I covered my disty tho. You can also do the underside of the hood and the firewall the same way. It also wouldnt hurt to wash your car afterwards to get any overspray off the paint, as it might eat the wax. Also on extremely dirty parts you may want to do a little scrubbing.
