Default mis fire

88 lx 5.0. ive been having a mis fire problem for a while now since i got my car 2 weeks ago and still dont know what can be causing it. i just changed the plugs, i thought that would fix it and it still mis-fires. the car has new taylor wires on it. the only thing i can thing of is that theres a point on the wires where the owner zip tied them together, right after the plugs leave the disstributer. can bad gas cause it? if any one can please give me some points on how to stop this misfire of fix the problem i would love it. all wires and everything is connected. today when i got it to mis fire i stood next to the engine and mulled the throttle a bit not much at all, you hear the engine suck in air then BOOM. misfire. please help.

as far as ive always know a missfire is when the cylinder doesnt fire, so it should be more like a offbeat rythm is its missfiring. a backfire is usually a boom. First i would take the zip tie off the wires, wire separators are made for a reason. in my experience a backfire in the engine compartment (coming out of the intake) is from wires not correct firing order, or a crossfire, caused by touching wires. 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 should be your firing order going counterclockwise and your cylinders are 1234 on the left of the engine front to back and 5678 on the right front to back (facing the engine from the front of the car).

check timing and make sure your plug wires are correct. I have seen guys tear their cars apart to find out that two wires were crossed.

i just got the copper autolite plugs and i put them it. it has the .054 gap. um, maybe the the wires all wraped up together is causing it, but isnt that why they are made out of rubber. and when you say the wires are crossed do u mean that the wires from 2 different cylinders are mixed up, because i thought the car wouldnt start at all then. it only happens if i rev the engine quickly, maybe a 1/4 throttle foot in and out. can bad gas cause this? my shop teacher said the exhaust smells like it has bad gas in it. he also said that since my battery has been dead for a while the computer has to relearn how to properly run. any thought?

bad gas in a fuel injected car has almost no effect. yes you computer needs like 10 minutes of driving to "learn". the rubber on the plug wires is not enough some times. im serious about cutting the zip ties and get separators. oh and yes, it will run with the plug wires on the wrong plugs. check them out.
