Just installed new MAF, having problems.

RE: Just installed new MAF, having problems.
Ok, sh*t this is gonna be a long post but I feel the need...
First, changing the size of the sampling tube without correcting for it either in the mass air sensor itself or through a tune WILL cause the meter to read improperly and WILL cause a lean condition. Now, with that being said, theirs a few ups and downs.
First, the ECU will be able to correct minor maf inaccuracies at part throttle and other closed loop (where the 02 sensors are used) conditions. But, and a big but - at full throttle the car goes into open loop and with that there will be no corrections. It should be noted that the reason the 73mm tube change (without electronics) is considered OK is because the factory tunes the cars rich - and alittle bit extra unmetered air is going to lean it out for max power. So as long as the maf is only a "little" bigger or you do minor port / post work then your just effectivly leaning the a/f out some.
Doing this sampling tube work will definately help top end power (mostly because of the leaner mixture) but the ECU will try to correct for this in closed loop - which is probably why your having problems idling. It will likely get alittle better after you drive it for a few days but probably won't go away. Just make sure you don't have any other mods that lean you out (most all mods affecting airflow will lean your tune out alittle too).
Personally I wouldn't do it myself, but to each their own.

RE: Just installed new MAF, having problems.
just discovered the problem. called up JDs and they said that because i had my filter bolted straight unto the MAF that turbulence created bad readings. i put the fenderwell elbow back in and now it idles and runs fine.
HOLY SH-T THE POWER INCREASE IS GREAT. HAD A 70MM TB THIS WHOLE TIME WITH STOCK MAF, NOW THAT I OPENED UP MY INTAKE, IT IS GREAT!!!
im finally done with all bolt ons!!!! nothing more for me to do except gears and heads teehee...

I FEEL LIKE RACING A HONDA CRX NOW....
that would be like standing a lion up against a billy goat...
still fun to watch even though I know the outcome [sm=icon_flaming.gif]

so when you put the maf in you noticed more pull? i gotta intake and tb and all... still stock maf, was going to wait on it, but if it makes for more pull i might reconsider
