RE: teh BASICS
removing the air silencer is simple. loosen the screw clamp on the pipe at the MAF meter and unclip the air filter cover on the inlet air box. remove the box cover and inlet air tube in one piece. remove the air filter from box. remove bolts from inside box holding box onto fender well. remove box. remove bolts holding air silencer on opposite side of fenderwall. manuever silencer down pass wheel and out then throw it away. replace inlet air box and filter and put cover back on and tighten clamp on tube and you're done.
to change the timing, you need to buy or borrow a timing light from somebody. clean the outer ring of the harmonic balancer with a rag so you can see the timing marks engraved on it and wipe off the pointer attached to the front engine cover so it has a clean sharp edge of it too. with the engine off, connect the timing light pickup to the #1 spark plug wire, first plug on left looking at engine from the front end. connect the light to the battery posts also. make sure the light wires are clear of any moving parts, then start the engine and let it warm up to normal temp. shut it off. there is a small plastic plug called the spout connector hanging from the wiring harness going to the distributor. carefully remove this spout connector plug and restart the engine. shine the timing light on the timing pointer and read the marks on the balancer to see what the timing is. stock is generally 10 degrees before top dead center. if you want to change the timing, loosen the hold down bolt on the distributor base where it goes into the block with a 1/2" wrench being careful not to get caught up in the serpintine belt. with the light shining on the marks, rotate the distributor clockwise to advance the timing and counter clockwise to retard it. once you have it where you want it, tighten down the hold down bolt and then double check to make sure the timing didn't move when you tightened down the bolt. if it did not, then you are done. shut off engine, reinstall the spout connector and disconnect the timing light and put it away. take the car out for a test drive where you can go wide open throttle with it. if it pings, the timing is set too high and you need to retard it some until the pinging goes away or you can do big time damage to your engine. you must run the highest octane gas available in your area in order to run the timing advanced past 12 degrees.
