Default Problem with cooling system.

Hey guys, looking for a little help. Lately I've been having problems with my cooling system. I'm loosing coolant like its WWII (bout 1-2 litres / half a gallona day). When topped up, my car performs fine, but once I lose some coolant, well then I run into problems. My engine starts to run hot and the heat will cut out and all I get is cold air. When this happens, I can smell a bit of coolant. Then, Intermitantly, the heat kicks in again and the engine temp will drop. Sometimes I will run near the RED on engine temp, but the heat usualy kicks in and its all good. I never seem to have problems when I'm fully topped up, but at 1-2 litres a day, it's getting to be a PITA. A friend said it kind of looked like I was lossing coolant from my water pump, but with the smell of coolent from my vent, and loss of heat when the coolent runs low, I think it might be my heater core. Any idea's? Thanks

Have the system pressure tested to see where the leak is. Just b/c you can smell the coolant inside the car doesn't necessarily mean it's the heater core. Feel around on the carpet under the dash to see if it's wet. Look around the engine compartment to see if there are any leaks.

You may also need to burp the cooling system.

Not sure if this is relevent. but I forgot to say that the HEAT light on this dash has come on and wont turn off. There is no wetness on the floor. Seems to be coming from the water pump. What exactly does "burp" mean?

Not sure what year your car is, but in my '93 the heater core has a resovoir at the bottom of the firewall (under the hood) where it will drain from...

If you are losing coolant from there, then it is probabaly your Heater Core.......

I just replaced mine last weekend....it was all sorts of fun

Hear isa pic of the resovoir...it is the black grommet on the firewall....

I'm driving a '94 GT.....the leak is coming from the front of the car. I'll go take a look at it in a bit, pretty sure its the water pump.

Do the Pressure test (Like Pro said) and it will give you an answere much faster then guessing, and you can do this while the motor is off and cool. Do you are safe and not burning your hands. You can get them from Auto Zone for free for 90 days (You have to leave a fully refundable deposit). I am guessing other places have them as well, but that is where I got mine.

ok so I went out and burped the system, not much air came out. I took my camera and snapped a couple of pics of the underside, here's what I got. Thanks guys, looks like its time to pressure test.
