Default MAF Conversion

I bought a '87 LX Hatch and want to seriously mod the whole car. I don't know much about the foxes. Can the stock speed densityy sensor be switched out for a MAF sensor for relatively cheap? I don't want to mod the engine until i can put a MAF on the car.

You could buy a MA conversion kit, but I think all you really need is the plug. Go to the wreckers and yoink one from there, along with another plug for the computer. Thats how I did/doing mine.. Ran some extra wires for the VSS, and fuel pump monitor (They go into the computer, hence the need for the extra computer pins) and the MAS, then attach those to the plug.. You'll also need the actual mass air sensor and computer though. Maybe you can find a complete kit, but it would be about 350-400.

Would the computer be able to understand the new sensor?

Not your current computer. Thats why you need an 89+ computer. A9x would be the computer your looking for, although I'm sure there are more.
