while you are there, may I suggest replacing the rack and pinion bushings with polyurethane, your choice of black or red.
6 VERY common issues when replacing the rack and pinion gear on a fox.
1. The power Steering Pump to Rack Line will leak do to rust/dryness inside the line that will tear the o-ring(unrepairable) in half once the line is turned, once reinstalled $40 part.
2. The outer tie rods will not allow you to remove them, without a shop torch $59 parts, two LUBEABLE.
3. The steering shaft joint point will be seized or severely rusted into the threads, not allowing removal without it breaking, $60 part.
4. Mechanic not using the new o-rings that should come with the rack and pinion taped onto the right side in a clear plastic bag, they are ESSENTIAL.
5.Mechanic using vice grips on the power steering pump line to remove it from the pump to rack assembly, breaking the power steering pump reservoir.
6.Mechanic faling to measure the end to end distance for tie rods on the old rack and pinion, to get a general ideah how many threads the new tie rods need to be screwed down, making the car impossible to drive to the alignment rack.[>:]
