problems past 4000 rpms

problems past 4000 rpms
i need help diagnosing a problem. my car starts breaking up at 4000 rpm and makes a popping noise from the rear of the car. could it be the fuel filter? Also i just had new gears put in, could the mechanic have put in to much friction modifier and the diff be slipping or could my clutch be slipping thanks
