Default gear question

Ok I understand what the gear ratio means but my question is how do you make a determination as to what ratio to run for a traget RPM. I have a opportunity to buya 9" with 4.71 gears. the car is mostly a racer but occasional driving. is there a rule of thumb or chart or something i can go by to learn some more about this. also what are your individual experiences.

Default RE: gear question

If you are using the same transmission, heres a little trick. If u currently have 3.07, for example. And you switch to 4.71, then whatever speed ur doing at 3070 rpms now, will be the what ur doing at 4710 rpms with the new gears. Im 99% positive this will work but if im wrong im sure someone will correct me soon.

Default RE: gear question

There are tons of calculators out there, but here is one I found from a quick google search.

I personally think that is way to steep for anything that is going to see the street. I had a buddy that had 4.30s in his Mach 1 and you couldn't go above 55mph otherwise the engine was just screaming the whole time. Granted he did have a C6 auto trans. If it had been a 6 speed manual trans, it wouldn't have been an issue, but those aren't an everyday setup for most people.
