Default Weird rubbing noise

After driving for awhile the rear left area of the car will sometimes vibrate and rub, im not sure what it is because it only does it when im driving.

It also does not do it all the time but when it does its pretty noticeable.

I took off the rear left wheel and was turning the axle and noticed some binding somewhere but i couldent pinpoint it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If it only does it while cruising down the road check your exhaust system = catback portion and see if any of the pipes are slightly touching the axle housing and or touching the upper control arms where the pipes arch over the rear end housing...and or check for any rub marks on the tail pipes where it could contact the body of the car

ok, now it was doing it all the way home

but it was coming from the drivers side rear wheel area and the fast i drove the faster the noise got and vice versa

it actually sounds more like a scraping noise.

Sounds like your diff. Or yes, inner or outer bearings. You need to open the rear end and have a look around. See if the diff fluid is particularly dirty or if there are slivers of metal. Have a friend spin the rear tires and listen for grinding. Since you are going to be in the rear end, buy the bearings ahead of time. It's good maintenance even if nothing is wrong. Also if you have a haynes or chiltons and a feeler guage check the differential for proper clearance.
