Default Broken Lifter?

I was setting up my rocker arms and as i was turning the engine over i heard a loud pop, one of my lifters now is real easy to push no resistance at all like the other, im guessing that one broke inside? There brand new so i can just get a new one for free, just want to make sure from you guys thats waht that loud pop was, and what could of caused it.

a new lifter should have SOME resistance, you should be able to grabt he rocker and easily rock it back effectively pushing the pushrod into the lifter (when the lobe is down and not opening the valve of course)

maybe it was airlocked and now its not, but if the rest of your lifters have a springy plunge to them and that one is flat out loose - you need to yank it out and investigate

ya i know for a fact i had that one shimmed wrong, and the rest got a lot of resistance to them and now that one is way too easy to push in, the rockers are now setup right like you said they should be. Only thing i can think to do is double check tomorow rotating the engine a couple times making sure it does not happen again with new lifter because im not reusing that one that popped. If it comes down too it can i reuse one of my old ones with a new cam in?

sounds like you installed one of the rockers with the flat part facing down, and broke the pedestal, been there, done that.

I would compare it to another one and make sure it isnt broken anywhere, and check your pushrod to make sure it didn't bend.
I had a lifter collapse and it destroyed the pushrod, making it an inch shorter than it started, but you sould know right away if that happened. do you have any pics?

I had a pop noise a couple times, once it was a couple of pedestals breaking cause i didnt check which way they were, and on my stud mount heads I broke a couple of studs due to them being too short, and I had pushrods too long which pushed them till they hit the stud and sheared it off

nope, maybe cuz my digital is so old i can never upload pics on here even when i try and resize em. Basically they werent even tightened down all the way i was adjusting other ones before it and i heard a pop and saw the rocker bounce on the spring top and everything seems ok, ill double check the pushrods and rocker but like i said everything looks and seems fine other than the lifter being much easier to push in than all the otehrs and my one old one.

I would take them all off and inspect them and the pushrods to make sure there isnt any broken parts.

done and done, i did that right when it popped, i even just went out there and double checked, everything checks out, im guessin if a pushrod is bent ill be able to tell holding it against another one and everything is fine and tell if a pedestal is broke by taking it off and looking at it and i even checked out the rockers and they roll and look fine other then lifter feeling and sounding like its broken inside. Everything is set up fine and no more popping now, only thing icould think is i just threw the rockers on with shims to start and maybe they just got too tight as i turned the engine over eventhough the pedestal bolts werent even hand tighten down all the way and broke the lifters inside.Im getting two new ones for free so i really dont care about that.
