How do you tell the difference between gt40, gt40P, and regular 5.0 heads. My buddy says he has gt40P heads on a stang he is parting out but I seriously doubt they are.

casting numbers is one way......stock heads say e7te and gt-40 heads in the valvetrain valley I believe will be stamped gt-40 and the gt-40p heads have a different exhaust port configuration for the unique header design they use but there are other ways to identify them that others on here may be more familiar with than me

The GT-40 and GT-40ps I think say "GT" under the valve cover. The GT-40(p)s also have a few "bars" cast into the front of the heads. The Gt-40s have 3 and the GT-40ps have 4.

GT40P heads actually have "GT40P" cast into the lifter valley. If he is parting out the heads, just look in the lifter valley.
