A speedo shop should be able to help you out by either swapping the Odometers between the two heads or by setting the new odometer to match the old one. When I worked at a speedometer shop we had pretty strict rules concerning odometer mileage changes and would usually need to do all of the work ourselves - IE R&R the old speedo and install the new one with the mileage set to match. In other cases we used an avidavit that we required the customer to have noterized regarding the odometer change. This document protected the shop.

Speedo shops are touchy about Odometer changes because they really do know how to pick an odometers and they do not want to be a party to fraud.

If you match the mileage between the two speedometers I wouldnot report this to a potentialnew owner or the DMV. The mileage on the car is accurate. A reciept from a Speedo shop would be proof.

shouldnt the mileage be exempt anyway if its a fox body? at least here in florida it is. i think if its 10 years old or older than mileage is exemp and you dont have to list it to the dmv. id just roll the thing with the drill and be ready to roll. dont they make overlays though? if i was you thats what i would have bought. but i guess then your gauge would be wayyy off

ya I think I will just try it with a drill.I wont inform the rmv mass is really strict about everything its so stupid.All im trying to do is match the new odemeter to the old ones miles so Im not trying to be a fraud or anything.Just want it reading my reall miles lol.

A drill running in reverse at 2000 rpm will cause the speedometer to register 120MPH. Running constantly for 22.5 days at this RPM will get your mileage on the new head to match your original one. Cheaper to let a pro do it right.

There are several good shops still in business that can do this work for you especially if they have both speedo's in hand.Google is your friend. When I did this for a living my companywould have matched odometers, figured out which head had the best guts,lubed it and bench calibrated it to factory specs at 30, 60, 90 and 120 MPH for anhours worth of labor. Cheap.
