OK, let's see if I can make this understandable for you. let's assume you have equal water pressure generated by the water pump at both ends of the block and the passages to the head are open of both ends, the water would tend to enter the head from both ends but not necessarily flow out in a front to back or back to front pathway. this would not be the best for cooling the valves in the head. but if one of the passageways is blocked off, then the water flow would enter the head and flow down the head and into the intake manifold where it would exit the engine via the thermostat opening and go on to the radiator to be cooled and pumped back into the block. this ensures a good flow through the head for the best cooling to take place, right?????

If they blocked them off in the heads and intake instead of the gasket, wouldn't you need left and right heads?
