Rear main seals are cheap, while your tranny is out and everything why not just install a new one instead of messing with silicone, I can't see that working well at all.
exactly what i was thinking. you already have the hardest part done(taking out tranny), just go ahead and replace the seal.
same...

+1 for just fixing the seal. Silicone is a hack job. Hopefully you didn't put any stop leak in either. That just temporarily expands your gaskets and anything rubber. Eventually the car will leak worse.

I wouldnt start it without the tranny, go ahead and replace the rear main, it would suck to take it all out again just to do it right

Thanks, I definitley won't bother running it now. I'm actually really puzzled as to where the oil was coming from. The rear main seal looks fine, but there was oil just below it, could have been coming from the oil pan gasket. But I also had oil getting inside the bellhousing somehow (enough for the clutch to slip), maybe this was coming from oil leaking around the PCV valve. Then I thought maybe it was actually tranny fluid inside the bellhousing that leaked down the input shaftand had turned black from dust and dirt, but the fluid level doesn't look too low. Anyone ever experience anything similar?

Looks like it might be coming from the PCV. OIL in the bellhousing and on the starter. Had the same thing. Man I hope I save you the headache I went thru. Check the lower intake. I figured it out while watchn the engine build off on horsepower TV a couple of weeks ago. Sure enough that was it. This was after I pulled the trans, upper (to get the to valve covers), and valve covers.

What is a probable cause of oil leaking at the PCV valve? Ican't tellif it's coming through the hose or from the intake.

C i thought i was my PCV because of the location. Everytime I would reach back there and feel. I had oil below it. But when I replace PCV and hose, it still was leaking. I did not have a clue until Iwatch that show. They dumped a gallon of oil in the valley. Then they cut the gasket at the end and ran a bead of silicone on the ends. Then put the lower on. If there is oil above the bellhousing and I know that the PCV and hose is not leaking. Maybe it is the lower. Madecents to me. I checked it and that is what it was.

yours may be something completely. But it would not hurt to check it.
