Default bouncing speedometer

My 1991 GT 5.0 has a bouncing speedometer, especially when the engine is cold. It bounces all around unless at a dead stop. I was advised to check the speed sensor near the trannsmission, so I asked the shop as they are rebuilding mine and they said it shouldn't cause that issue since I have a manual gauge, not electric. Does anyone know what I should look into next? TIA.

You need to take out the cable and put some really thin grease on it (the actual cable inside theouter covering)to lubricate it. It works better when hot because the grease is warming up and getting thinner. If you don't do this then just take it out, clean it all up with brake cleaner and then coat the thing in graphite. That usually does the trick.

The speedo cable can be going bad, the speedo gear going into the trans can be worn, or the gearing in the speedo gears in the speedo it self.

My speedometer needle hasn't jumped around since its beenhot, but just started doing it today. I pretty sure mine is the speedo gear behing the cluster b/c on can hear it inside the car...sounds like a scraping noise over and over.

if a cable doesn't solve the issue then you'll need a new speedometer ..I've had a few do that and it was the speedo itself
