The alternator bracket supports only the smog pump and alt. It's made of aluminum and not very heavy. I used a dremel the first time I did the 3G conversion and spent a good hour grinding.... the second time with a 4" electric grinder took about 2 minutes (Careful of the fuel lines, they're pretty close).

If you put the 3G bottom bolt in and move the alternator towards where you will bolt the top and you'll see that it hits, I used a marker and outlined it and ground it away. The second time around we also needed to flatten the bottom of the alternator bracket top bolt hole so it didn't hit the top of the alternator.
