oil question
ok, normally i lurk in the classic section. but since my 65 has a early 90's 5.0 HO EFI motor I came over here.
Simple question, What oil is recommended for this motor, 10w-30? 10w-40? other? and what brand do guys recommend?
Thanks!

I use 10-30 Motorcraft oil since it's a synthetic blend. I also use Bosch filters. I read a test on oil filters some years ago, and they came out WAY on top. I bought my car used with 120K miles on it. They used what ever brand oil filters on it. I think the one I took off was a Motorcraft..the oil looked like crude. Anyway, I've used the Bosch now for 3(?) oil changes, and now my oil stays cleaner longer. I'm changing my oil at 1500 - 2000 miles right now. I currently have 600 miles on this oil change and the oil still looks clean. That's my .02.

5-30 is good for a newer tighter tolerence built engine. If you've got some miles on it, I would go with a slightly more viscous oil. Now, the modular engines are a different story. They are tight tolerence, period. My DOHC 4.6 has 131K on it and it still runs 5-20 with 5K miles between oil changes. My oil even after 5K miles is still clean! That's no joke either.

thanks guys,
i think this is a pretty stock motor. I have no idea of how many miles are on it. I found this car sitting under a cover in a yard and the guy didn't know too much about the details. He had bought it because the body was in such good shape and wanted to do an original mustang restoration, then lost interest. it's a 65 coupe with a fuel inected 5.0 with t5 trans. From what I've found the drive train was pulled from a early 90's 5.0 I just haven't tracked down the exact year. All it took to get the thing running was to put a new battery in and tighten the cable on the selenoid. Now that I got it started I want to do the full tune up, and change all the fluids. Took it around the block and had a blast, can't wait to drive it a lot more!

Excerpt from a oil filter test:
"My overall opinion, is use a different brand, unless you really want to keep Ford branded with a Ford vehicle. It did not seem to filter as well as the others I've seen. The oil after 3,000 in this Xterra was filthy, where as the last oil change it was a darker brown, but still clear enough to see through. So not impressed!"
Don't take me wrong, I'm sure there are better filters than the one I use, I just know it's better than most. Again, only my .02.
