upgrade 85GT quarter windows HELP
I have a 1985GT Hatch and Vert.. The Hatchback has been suffering from leaking quarter windows for about a year. I have replaced the quarter window seal 4 times and still it does not stop. As water runs down the glass it gets past the seal and right into the car.. Anyway, I want to upgrade to the better 87-up quarter windows and need help from those of you who have done this..
I just need to know what you had to do as far as drilling and altering your existing window area inorder to install the newer windows. Pics would be good also if you have to the time to post them.
This problem is driving me crazy but it seems that this is going to be my only fix for this problem.

Hey Dazz...I've done this on my 86 about 4 years ago ish. The 87-93 quarter windows bolt right into the existing window opening, except there's a few catches.
The drip molding going from the mirror to over your existing windows and louvers needs to be removed and shortened.
Since the glass now bolts to the outside of the car instead of butyled on the inside, the interior quarter panel trim will have an inch and a half gap between the window. You can either install some 87-89 panels or not. I didn't and left the gap since it really didn't bother me, just don't drop anything inbetween there or you'll have to remove the panel to get it!
You're going to need some new butyl tape as that's what seals the window to the body. It's the same stuff that's holding your quarter windows in there now.

Does the new butyl tape goes under the edge of the lip that actually touches the body? I know I need to put some around the triangle opening but I was curious if I needed more around the lip to keep the water from seeping in..
Did you have to drill holes for the new mounts? I dont think my b-pillar has any holes other than the ones for the sail panels.

i did mine a while ago too. easy bute-all tape is what i used to seal it. get all the inside panels including trunk area as its all differant and wont fit the 86 trunk panels. i know im repeating what was said just reminding you

You don't ahve to drill anything. The bolts going down the b pillar don't hit anything at all. At least on my 83 they don't. I am gonna get some big washers or weld in a couple of small pieces of metal to hold the front of the window tight. I havn't sealed mine yet but I do have them bolted in. Just don't tighten the back nuts too tight or you will start to bow in the window. Just take it slow when you tighten all the nuts down.
