Default Head/Block Dowels

Do the block dowels have any other purpose besides aligning the heads to the block?

Do you have to have the dowels in at all?

i found out that my engine doesnt have the dowels in the block and the head gasket blew on it. Do you think that is bc the dowels were not in there?

yuppers.

if you don't have them in there theres a chance the gasket or head may mover very slightly which would cause a blown gasket/damaging something in the head. I put my heads on without the dowels once without realizing it and had to scrap a brand new set of 1011 felpro's hg's because of it. it was a bad day...
