speedo question.
ive been running around with out a working speedometer, it didnt bother me too much but now id like to get it workin again. i trouble shooted a couple a months on it before i gave up on it for the 3rd time. i had the instrument panel out of the car and had the cable hooked to it. i could spin the gear at the end of the tranny side of the cable and the needle would work. but it seems like i had to apply a little pressure on the gear to get the needle to move. but it worked. the gear it self was kind of worn the teeth werent as tall as a other gear i had. now when i bolt it up to my tranny it doenst work. but yet i see a connector on the fastner that bolts to the tranny for the cable. im not sure what it is it seems like electronically controlled speedo but my buddies 92 is unplugged and his works just fine. any suggestions?

I'm not sure I'm fully understanding. But it sounds like you're saying that the teeth are worn out on the gear or are shorter than they are supposed to be? It also sounds like you could manually spin the gear to get the speedo to work. In that case, why not just buy a new gear? They're cheap and easy to install. Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem like much to really troubleshoot here.

yea i would replace the gear if you can spin the cable at the trans end, and the needle moves, which tells you the cable is not broken...yet....but it could also be the nylon gear inside the tail shaft worn out too..i would get a light in there and see if the gear in there looks okay

That connector is for the ECM, Cruise control, with a cable the car has no idea how fast you're going, it needs a way of knowing so they put a small sensor on the end of the cable for that reason.
As has been said, buy the gear for 32 cents
