broken tap

Default broken tap

alright heres the scop. i had a broken motor mount and when i went to change one of the bolts broke off at the head, not a big prob. so i drilled out and went to tap new threads, well to my luck the tap broke off clean and i have no clue how to get it out, any suggestions?

They make tap extractors. Otherwise, you're gonna have to get a punch and try and break it apart inside the hole. Done that before, it's not a fun job.

where could i find the tap extractor? auto value and auto zone both told me there was no such thing?

best bet is to try and use a punch to get it out then install a helicoil

You can find them at a Grainger or Fastenal store, or a local machine tooling supplier. If ya know anyone that is a machinist, they could loan ya one. In alot of instances you will have to break it into small pieces. Always use lubricant when tapping. Dry tapping will get you in trouble most of te time. USE SAFETY GLASSES!!!!

Also when tapping go slow. Turn your tap in 1/2 turn then turn it back out 1/2 turn. Then turn in until it grabs again and go 1/2 turn in and then back out 1/2 turn. Do that till it bottoms out. Then remove the tap and spray the whole down with brake kleen or something to clean it out. Always use oil or a thread cutting lube with tapping.

so i took a punch and broke the tap out and luckly i still had about 10 good threads in it so i got a new tap and sprayed out the hole first then retaped w/ lube and its good to go now. thanks for all the help yall are serious life savers.(and money savers!!!)
